Insomnia · an app we are exploring
A complete six-week CBT-I course.
This is a six-week course built on CBT-I, which medical guidelines recommend as the first treatment for long-term insomnia in adults. In trials, people who did an online CBT-I course slept better than people given sleep advice alone. This course hasn't been tested in a trial of its own.
From week two the course has you spend less time in bed, and the first few weeks of that are hard. You see your own week-two sleep window before you pay.
What it would do
- Sleep diaryTwenty seconds a morning. Apple Health sleep can fill a starting value you confirm.
- Your sleep windowSet from your diary and adjusted each week by the standard efficiency rule, with the reason shown.
- Six weekly modulesSleep drive and the body clock, stimulus control, the sleep window, the racing mind, relapse plans, and coming off sleeping tablets with your prescriber.
- Waking at 3amWhat to do when you wake in the night, with an audio track for the time out of bed.
- Screening firstQuestions about sleep apnoea, shift work, pregnancy, bipolar disorder and seizures, which send you to a doctor instead of the course.
- Weekly cardTime in bed, sleep efficiency and next week's window.
- Doctor reportA PDF for your GP, and a CSV export at any time that you keep after the course.
What it would not do
- It does not replace a doctor.
- It is not for shift workers, pregnancy, untreated sleep apnoea, bipolar disorder or seizures.
- The course would follow the Australasian Sleep Association's guidance on CBT-I, shown in the app.
