Bloom · for clinicians

A behavioural activation tool for between sessions.

Bloom runs the core BA model on your client's phone: scheduling activities, rating them before and after, and seeing which ones helped. No account, and nothing leaves the device.

What Bloom does

See all 142 activities, grouped by area and length, or print the free worksheet and activity list.

  • Daily schedulingActivities come day by day, or the client plans ahead, gives them times and Bloom reminds them.
  • 142 activitiesFiltered by place, effort and length. Clients add their own and hide what doesn't suit. The full list is on this site.
  • Pre and post ACE ratingsExpected and actual achievement, closeness and enjoyment, 0 to 10, with depression on 1 to 100 and importance after the activity. Bloom shows the expected and actual scores together, so you can both see where they differ.
  • A summary for session reviewA PDF of activities and ratings over the period the client chooses. You only see it if they send it. Patterns ranks what has helped once there are five answers.

How to use it with clients

  1. Point them to the App StoreFree to download, with no account and nothing to set up.
  2. Turn the program on togetherIn Settings, turn on Before and after ratings.
  3. Plan the first few days in sessionChoose activities together and give them times. Bloom reminds them when each one is due.
  4. Encourage pre-activity ratingsExpected scores are clinically meaningful, and anticipated pleasure predicts improvement in depression. Prompt them to rate before, not just after.
  5. Review the summary in sessionAsk them to bring the PDF, or open Patterns together. It ranks which activities left them feeling better.

Clinical background

The program follows the RANZCP Mood disorders clinical practice guideline (2020), and Bloom shows it in Settings while the program is on. There is a review point every two weeks, to match the fortnightly cadence clients see a psychologist on under Better Access.

Behavioural activation does about as well as CBT for depression, and it holds up when delivered by junior workers. The evidence, with sources, is on our research page. For a web version to use in session, see behaviouralactivation.com.au.

A clinical aid, not a replacement for therapy. Bloom is not a medical device, does not diagnose or treat, does not assess risk, and has no crisis features.
